John Wayne Saves Poor Little Rich Kid
The 10th in the Silver Star/Paul Malvern Productions western series starring John Wayne. The plot is a little on the convoluted side: Wayne is the unofficial guardian of a 6-7 year old girl who is in line to inherit $50,000 from her father if he can be found and directly if he is proved dead. Yakima Canutt (Sam Black) the gang leader is after the kid. A pair of Express Office robbers is after the kid. The girl's father uncredited Earl Dwire (Tom Moore) shows up. What a mess! Meanwhile, Wayne falls for Sheila Terry, sister of one of the robbers and meets up with George "Gabby" Hayes, who has a small but important part as the cook for the other robber. IMDb says Terry who appeared in 43 movies between 1932-43. Shirley Jane Rickert (Nina) the little girl at the center of everything is sweet and has a child's way of both saying the wrong thing at the wrong time and being strong and clever at the right time. IMDb tells us that between 1930-lm career she 54 she was a child in 23 of the silent shorts Hal Roach's Rascals and and then an uncredited actress in most of the 17 talkies she did. Following her fil she did burlesque striptease and many other disparate jobs. Plot devices that appear in other films in this series: Wayne jumps into a river more than once; a robber trades clothes with him and Wayne is accused of the robbery; Wayne gets the girl. The other IA version may be sharper but it is 2 minutes shorter than this one. An average B western.
